Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the diagram, such as the changes to the museum, library, and administrative buildings. However, the overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the shift from administrative/institutional use to commercial/leisure use. The description is somewhat repetitive and lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band. While the main features are identified, the comparison between 2014 and 2020 could be more precise, as the response relies on general statements like 'changed entirely' rather than specific details about the layout or the addition of new features like the plant beds.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, particularly the use of 'First of all' and 'Second of all'. The progression of ideas is logical, but the transitions between sentences feel disjointed at times. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect the changes more fluidly. The concluding paragraph is somewhat informal and does not effectively summarise the key information presented in the body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. Phrases like 'huge development and progress' and 'whole condition' are somewhat vague. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'projects to development to area' and 'both side of views of diagram'. While the meaning is generally clear, the student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to use more sophisticated terminology related to urban planning or spatial changes. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise verbs and nouns to describe the transformation of the town square.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'explaining the projects to development to area' and 'as compared the situation'. There are also issues with article usage ('the history museum', 'into bar and restaurants') and subject-verb agreement. While the errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past and future states.
