Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the changes between 2014 and 2020, but it fails to provide a clear overview or a structured comparison. While it lists some features, it lacks the analytical approach required for an Academic Task 1. The description is repetitive and relies on listing items rather than synthesizing the information. Crucially, it fails to highlight the main trends or significant changes effectively, such as the shift from commercial/administrative use to more community-focused facilities. The lack of a clear summary of the overall transformation limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into two paragraphs, but the internal structure is weak. There is a lack of logical progression, and the use of cohesive devices is minimal and often inaccurate. For example, the transition 'Now then 2014s diagram' is confusing and does not effectively link ideas. The sentences are often disjointed, and the lack of clear signposting makes the text difficult to follow. Paragraphing is present but does not serve to organize the information logically, as the content within the paragraphs is somewhat jumbled.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student uses basic terms like 'show', 'nice', and 'develop' repeatedly throughout the text. There are frequent errors in word formation and spelling, such as 'sorround', 'devlope', 'converd', and 'gallary'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the features of a map or the nature of urban development with any precision. The reliance on simple, everyday language prevents the response from demonstrating the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement ('The diagram is shows'), tense usage ('is remove'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, and punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the use of periods and capitalization. There is almost no attempt at complex sentence structures; the writing consists primarily of simple, error-prone sentences. These persistent errors in basic grammar significantly affect the readability of the report.
