IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The maps illustrate the changes planned for a town square and its surrounding area between 2014 and 2020.

Overall, the area is planned to become more modern and recreational. Several existing buildings will be replaced, while new facilities such as a supermarket, shops, children’s playground, covered seating and plant beds will be added.

In 2014, the town square had a fish market and town hall at the top.A history museum and library were on the western side.There was a fish restaurant and bar at the bottom.The centre contained a fountain and bandstand,while administrativebuildings were located on the eastern side.

By 2020, the fish market will become a supermarket, while the town hall will remain. The museum will be replaced by a local artists’ gallery, and the administrative buildings will be replaced by shops.

New facilities, including children’s playground, covered seating, plant beds and several restaurants, will be introduced. The fountain will remain, although the old bandstand will disappear.
