IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates a town square and it's surrounding area in 2014 and plans to complete the redevelopment in 2020.
Overall, the plan for a town square in 2014 had a history museum and library on the western side while the fountain remained the center of attraction in the plan. The North side of the town square has a fish market along side the same way to the town hall. Opposite the fish market on the south side is the fish restaurant and a bar.
The plan to redevelop the town square has massive change. First, the fish market was now converted to a supermarket. The area around the fountain had children's playground with covered seating arrangement for family and the elderly with a beautiful view of plant beds just on the opposite side of the covered seating area. There are shops at the east side of the town square.
In conclusion, the changes in the town square with additional facilities and leisure activity have brought a noticible features in the plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the town square in both 2014 and the 2020 plan. You clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the conversion of the fish market into a supermarket and the addition of the playground and seating areas. However, to reach a higher band, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview of the spatial layout. For instance, you mentioned the library and museum but did not explicitly state their fate in the 2020 plan, which is a key part of the comparison. Additionally, ensure your overview clearly synthesises the most significant trends rather than just listing features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 2014 layout to the 2020 developments. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'First' and 'In conclusion', to structure your writing. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the same way') is precise so the reader can easily track the locations being described.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'converted', and 'leisure activity'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'noticible features' (spelling) and 'along side the same way', which slightly impact the precision of your description. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations to describe spatial changes, such as 'replaced by', 'relocated', or 'transformed into', rather than relying on general verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'it's surrounding area' (should be 'its'), 'the fish market was now converted' (tense inconsistency), and 'had children's playground' (missing article). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
