Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps below illustrate the comparison of a town square and area of all around in 2014 and, the ideas for the transformation of that area to be constructed by 2020.

Overall, the infrastructure underwent significant modernization. Several cutting-edged buildings were added; however, a substantial number of shops were relocated. The location of the central fountain and the town hall were unaltered.

In 2014, the town square was a basic area with a minor number of amenities. In the front of the fountain, there was a fish market and a town hall side-by-side. There was a history museum that was modified into a local artist's gallery in 2020.

The developed plan included numerous shops and bars. In the place of administrative buildings, a vast number of shops were built. A supermarket was replaced by the fish market. A play area for kids and covered seating were placed around the fountain. The two plant beds were placed in front of the mart.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the town square development, such as the addition of shops, the play area, and the conversion of the museum. You provide a clear overview and make relevant comparisons between 2014 and 2020. However, the response could be improved by being more precise with the spatial descriptions. For instance, stating 'a substantial number of shops were relocated' is slightly vague, and the description of the 'mart' and 'plant beds' lacks clarity regarding their specific placement relative to the original layout. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key changes are described with consistent accuracy and detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In 2014' and 'In the place of', to guide the reader through the timeline and spatial changes. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the museum and the new shops could be smoother. Additionally, the paragraphing is functional, but ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus to improve the overall flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'modernization', and 'administrative buildings'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'area of all around' (which is non-standard) and 'cutting-edged' (the correct form is 'cutting-edge'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, these occasional errors and slightly awkward phrasings prevent a higher score. Focusing on more natural collocations and ensuring the correct form of adjectives will help improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'a minor number of amenities' (which should be 'a small number') and 'the town hall side-by-side' (which lacks a verb). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after '2014 and'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a need for more careful proofreading of basic sentence construction and article usage.
