IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the town square and areas surrounding it, in the year 2014 and how the area will look like after completion in 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the town square will undergo refurbishing. More bars and restaurants will be constructed around the town hall with the fountain still in place.
From the diagram, the total area occupied will remain the same. However, the space where the fish restaurant and a bar occupied in 2014 will be renovated and more bars and restaurants constructed. Furthermore, the administrative building that was situated at the left side of the band stand will be totally demolished and more shops erected. The point where the fountain is will remain the same.
Furthermore, there is going to be the introduction of plant beds, a children play ground and covered seats just around the fountain. However, the town hall will remain the same at the same spot, but fish market will be remodeled to form a supermarket with a local art gallery attached to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the development plan well. You successfully identified key changes, such as the demolition of the administrative building and the addition of new amenities like the children's playground. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons between the two years. For instance, while you mention the fish restaurant will be renovated, specifying the exact location or the scale of the changes would enhance the clarity. The overview is clear, but adding a bit more detail regarding the overall transformation of the town square would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the development. To reach a higher band, ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always precise, as in the sentence 'the space where the fish restaurant and a bar occupied', which is grammatically slightly awkward and affects the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbishing', 'demolished', 'erected', and 'remodeled'. These are appropriate for describing urban development. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the space where the fish restaurant and a bar occupied' (should be 'occupied by') and 'children play ground' (should be 'children's playground'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to urban planning, such as 'pedestrianized zone' or 'recreational facilities', to show a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'how the area will look like' is incorrect; it should be 'what the area will look like'. You also have issues with articles and possessives, such as 'children play ground' instead of 'children's playground'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to improve your accuracy.
