Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram here illustrates a map of a town square and its surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of area to be completed by 2020.

The map of 2014 has more free space as compared to the map of 2020, which is more complicated and crowded. Significant changes regarding distribution of area and empty space is displayed in both the maps which shows huge differences in the map.

The fish market is converted into a supermarket and the town hall remains at the same area. The area of administrative buildings are renovated into different blocks for shops. Then the fish restaurant and bar shop are renovated into bars and restaurants. The library building is not there and is replaced by empty buildings. After that, the history museum in renovated into local artists' gallery. In center, the fountain remains at the same spot in the map of 2020. At last, the free space around the fountain is converted into covered seating, children's playground and plant beds and the spto for band stand is removed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the transformation well. You successfully identified key changes, such as the conversion of the fish market and the addition of new amenities like the playground and seating. However, the overview is somewhat weak; describing the 2020 map as 'more complicated and crowded' is a subjective interpretation rather than a clear summary of the spatial changes. To improve, focus on highlighting the most significant trends, such as the shift from open space to structured recreational facilities. You have addressed all parts of the prompt, but the reporting of data could be more precise to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of changes. You use some cohesive devices like 'then', 'after that', and 'at last' to sequence the information. However, these transitions feel a bit mechanical and repetitive. The flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases or referencing techniques to connect the 2014 and 2020 features more fluidly. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the introductory overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother to enhance the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovated', 'converted', and 'administrative buildings'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'bar shop' and 'empty buildings' (which is vague). To reach a higher band, try to use more precise descriptive language, such as 'repurposed', 'transformed', or 'commercial units'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands. Focus on using more specific terminology related to urban planning and map descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'distribution of area and empty space is displayed' (should be 'are displayed') and 'the spto for band stand' (spelling error). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'the library building is not there'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
