IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps show the changes that took place in a town square in 2014 and the proposed development of the area by 2020.

Overall, the town square is planned to become more developed and provide more facilities for local people. The main changes include replacing the fish market, adding shops and restaurants, and creating new recreational areas.

In 2014, there was a fish market in the north-west of the square, while the town hall was situated in the north-east. A history museum and a library were located on the western side. In the centre, there was a fountain and a bandstand. On the southern side, there was a fish restaurant and a bar. An administrative building was located on the eastern side.

By 2020, the fish market is planned to be replaced by a supermarket. A local market will also be built on the western side. Several shops will be added on the eastern side, and some restaurants will be developed along the south. The center will still have a fountain, but a children's playground and covered seating will be added. There will also be plant beds in the northern part of the square.
