IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two plans illustrate how a town square and surrounding area look in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020.

Overall, the site will be more modernized and will include various facilities. In contrast, the site will be converted from providing administrative facilities to public facilities. The various facilities such as bars and restaurants, shops, children's playground, and supermarket will be added.

In 2014, on the upper side of the plan on the left side there was a fish market and on the right side, there was a town hall. In 2020, the fish market will be replaced by the supermarket. On the lower side there was a history museum, which will be converted to local artists gallery by 2020. However, on the south-west corner there was a library, but it will be removed and divided into two blocks in 2020.

Moreover, the bandstand near the town hall will be removed and the additional plant beds will be included near the supermarket and the town hall. The administrative buildings on the right side will be replaced by the shops by dividing into various small blocks. The fish market and a bar on the lower side of the plan will be converted to bars and restaurants by dividing into smaller blocks. The newly covered seating will be added near the bars and restaurants by the end of 2020. An additional children's playground will be included near the shops in 2020. However, the location of a fountain and the town hall was remained unchanged.
