IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagrams ilustrate the layout of a town square in 2014 and the planned changes for 2020.

Overall, the square will become more modern, with more facilities for shopping and entertainment. However, several existing buildings will be removed or replaced.

In 2014, there was a fish market in the north-west, with a history museum and library below it. Meanwhile, a fish restaurant was nearby. In the centre, there were a fountain and a bandstand, while a bar was in the south-east. On the eastern side, there were administrative buildings and a town hall.

By 2020, however, the fish market will become a supermarket, while the museum will change into a local artists’ gallery. In addition, the library and fish restaurant will disappear. Instead, bars and restaurants will be added. Furthermore, plant beds, covered seating and a children’s playground will be built. Finally, the administrative buildings will be replaced by shops.
