Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the conversion of the fish market and museum. However, the description of the 2014 layout is somewhat cluttered and lacks a clear, logical progression. While the main trends are identified, some details are inaccurate or confusingly described, such as the claim that the library and restaurant are connected, which is not clearly supported by the visual evidence. The overview is present but could be more concise and focused on the most significant changes to better meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps structure the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'below of it' or 'the opposite side of'. The flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial relationships between the buildings. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the 2014 description and the 2020 plan could be smoother to improve the overall logical progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'restro' (informal), 'administrative buildings bee of it', and 'transformed info'. The student relies on basic descriptive language and struggles with accurate collocations when describing the layout (e.g., 'northern west side' instead of 'north-west'). To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on using more precise geographical and descriptive terminology and avoid informal abbreviations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the maps', 'the history museum'), subject-verb agreement errors ('the infrastructure include'), and awkward sentence construction ('the area cover some specific facilities'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, these frequent errors persist and occasionally impede the flow of the text, preventing a higher score in this criterion.
