Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the transformation of a town square and the enviroment around it in 2014 and 2020.
Overall, it is clear that the difference is noticeable as almost everything were completely renovated and also a lot new area and places were added.
The only thing that remained in the new town square in 2020 were the fountain in that is in the center and the townhall in the northeast. The bandstand that used in to be near the fountain was removed and two plant beds were placed there instead. To the side, a children's playground was also a new built. Down the center, two covered seating areas were installed, making the center area look more complete and less empty.
The market located in the northwest was originally a fish market in 2014 but it was changed into a supermarket in 2020. Down the south of the market, there used to a history museum however, it got reconstructed into a local artist's gallery. From the center, to the southwest was a library and more to the south were a bar and a fish specicalized eater. The library was demolished and the whole area became a bar and restaurants area. Finally to the east, shops were built in place of admininstrative buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the diagram, including the retention of the fountain and town hall, and the various developments such as the market, gallery, and seating areas. The overview is clear and identifies the main trend of renovation and expansion. However, the report could be improved by grouping the changes more logically (e.g., structural changes vs. functional changes) to better highlight the comparisons. While the main features are selected and reported, the description of the locations is occasionally slightly imprecise, such as 'down the south of the market', which could be more accurately described using standard directional language.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the central features to the surrounding buildings. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The only thing that remained', 'To the side', and 'Finally', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as 'the fountain in that is in the center'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the central square from the surrounding buildings, which aids readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'transformation', 'renovated', 'demolished', and 'reconstructed' used correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'enviroment' (environment), 'new built' (newly built), and 'fish specicalized eater' (specialized fish restaurant). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy for common academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('almost everything were', 'there used to a history museum') and awkward phrasing ('the bandstand that used in to be'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the information. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but the control over these is inconsistent. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences and refining the use of prepositions would help improve the score in this criterion.
