Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrates the current state of town square and surrounding area and the future plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020.

Overall, the the town square is going to have significant redevelopment, with many new features being invented and some being re-constructed. New facilities are going to be introduced including an children's playground, covered seating and plant beds.

There will be a new supermarket in 2020 at the south west are of town square, which will be replacing the fish market. The fish restaurant will be removed from the north side of the town square and the area will be divided into two smaller sections. Similarly, the library from the west of the town square will be removed and reconstructed into two smaller sections. The history museum on the left wing will be replaced by local artists gallery.

The town hall stayed untouched as well as the fountain. Two plant beds will be constructed right behind the fountain one facing the supermarket and one facing town hall. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the development plan and provided a clear comparison between the 2014 and 2020 layouts. You covered all the significant changes, such as the removal of the fish market and the addition of new amenities like the playground and seating. However, the response could be improved by grouping the information more logically—for instance, by categorizing changes into 'additions' and 'removals' rather than listing them sequentially. Additionally, ensure that you do not invent information; you mentioned 'invented' features, but the prompt implies these are planned developments, not inventions. Overall, you provided a clear overview of the transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'Similarly' and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disconnected. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression of ideas flows more naturally from one sentence to the next, rather than just listing changes.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'reconstructed', and 'administrative buildings'. However, there are some word choice errors, such as 'invented' (which is incorrect in this context; 'introduced' or 'implemented' would be better) and 'are' instead of 'area'. You also repeat 'town square' frequently. To improve, try to use synonyms or refer to the location using pronouns or descriptive phrases to avoid repetition. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The fish restaurant will be removed... and the area will be divided'. There are several grammatical slips, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The two maps illustrates') and minor errors with articles (e.g., 'an children's playground'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage to ensure your writing is more polished and accurate.
