Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first diagram gives the outline of the town square and its neighboring places in 2014 while the other illustrates the future plan of the town and its surroundings to be established by the year 2020.

Overall, 2014 structure is very basic compared to future plan, in which administrative buildings occupied almost half of the space while new plan has significant newer additions. The fountain residing in the middle of town is remained constant.

In 2014, very few surrounding buildings are located including fish market and town hall towards north. Moreover, history museum along with library situated along west of the map. The area in the middle is completely void with a single shop in northeast corner. The southeast area is fully occupied with administrative buildings while a bar and restaurant residing in the south.

In terms of 2020, more number of buildings are planned to implement such as, children's playground, overhead seating, and plain beds in the space surrounded by shops. The fish market is renamed as supermarket whereas the town hall stood same. History museum is replaced with local art gallery while the library is completely removed. Administrative buildings are now spilt into several shops. Many different restaurants are now added towards south of the map.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the town square development. You provided a clear overview and compared the 2014 and 2020 layouts effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting; for instance, you mentioned the library was 'completely removed' and the administrative buildings were 'split into several shops', whereas the diagram shows the library being replaced by a new building and the administrative area being repurposed. To reach a higher band, ensure that your descriptions of the changes are precise and strictly reflect the visual data provided. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In terms of', and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two timeframes, which helps the reader follow the progression of the development. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'administrative buildings', 'neighboring places', and 'repurposed'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'the area in the middle is completely void' (should be 'vacant' or 'empty') and 'planned to implement such as' (should be 'planned, such as'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as '2014 structure is very basic' (missing article 'the'), 'fountain... is remained constant' (incorrect passive voice), and 'more number of buildings' (should be 'a greater number of'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and consistent verb tense usage when describing past and future states.
