IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the existing layout of an area in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. Overall, the area is planned to become more developed and recreational, with several existing building being replaced by shops, a supermarket and leisure facilities. However, the town hall and fountain will remain in the same locations. In 2014, the northern part of the area contained a fish market and a town hall. by 2020 the fish market is planned to be replaced as a supermarket, while the town hall will remain unchanged. On the western side, the history, museum will be converted into a local artists gallery. In addition, the administrative buildings on the eastern side will be replaced by several shops. In the central area, the foundation will remain in replace, although the bandstand will be removed and replaced by plants bed. A children's playground and covered seating area are also planned nearby. In the southern part, the fish restaurant and bar will disappear, while new shops and other facilities will be introduced.
