Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map diagram illustrates the modifications of a town square in the span of 6 years from 2014 to 2020. Overall, the town square has undergone several advancements over the years of development. Town hall and fountain have remained at the same location, whereas other facilities such as history museum, fish market, bandstand and administrative buildings have been replaced.

Looking first at the center of the town square, the fountain remained constant as the midpoint. A bandstand was situated in north-east direction of the fountain in 2014, however it was replaced by plant beds slightly towards the north of the fountain in 2020. Additionally, various amenities were introduced such as children's playground and sheltered seating areas in the south direction of the fountain.

Turning to the perimeter of the town square, town hall located in top right corner of the northern wall of the town square did not undergo any modifications. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the town square development. You have clearly distinguished between the areas that remained unchanged, such as the town hall and fountain, and those that were modified or replaced. The overview provides a good summary of the changes. However, the response ends abruptly mid-sentence, which leaves the final description of the fish restaurant and bar incomplete. While the key features are covered, this lack of completion prevents a fully developed response. To reach a higher band, ensure that all observations are fully articulated and that the conclusion or final points are finished to provide a sense of closure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on the center and perimeter, and a logical progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Additionally', 'Turning to', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader. However, the abrupt ending of the final sentence disrupts the flow and cohesion of the concluding section. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the map. To improve, ensure that all sentences are complete and that cohesive links are maintained throughout the entire text, especially when transitioning to final observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'modifications', 'advancements', 'situated', and 'transformed'. The language is generally precise enough to convey the intended meaning. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'in north-east direction' (should be 'to the north-east of') and 'in the south direction' (should be 'to the south of'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more varied and sophisticated descriptors for the changes—such as 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'redeveloped'—would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The administrative buildings in 2014 was entirely changed' (subject-verb agreement error: 'buildings' should take 'were') and 'fish restaurant and bar was further established' (should be 'were'). Additionally, the final sentence is incomplete, which is a significant grammatical error. While you show an attempt at complex structures, the frequency of these errors, combined with the unfinished sentence, limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences have a clear subject and predicate will improve your accuracy.
