Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the diagram, identifying the key changes between 2014 and 2020. However, the overview is somewhat weak and lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends. While the student identifies the replacement of the museum and the addition of shops, the description of the layout is often confusing and lacks precision. For instance, the phrase 'down south side of fish restaurant' is vague. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on grouping information more logically—perhaps by area or by type of change—rather than listing features in a disjointed manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure is problematic. The progression of ideas is often unclear, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical or missing entirely. For example, the transition between the description of the 2014 layout and the 2020 plans is abrupt. There is a lack of linking words to guide the reader through the comparisons. Referencing is also inconsistent, making it difficult to follow which building is being discussed in relation to others. Improved use of signposting language would significantly enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic directional language ('north side', 'east side'). There are several instances of awkward word choice and incorrect collocations, such as 'terminated by shops' and 'other thing in the middle'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe urban development, such as 'demolished', 'converted', or 'extended'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in word choice restrict the score to the 5.0 band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are significant issues with verb tense consistency ('was build', 'is found'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack necessary prepositions, such as 'in the middle of town made new seating area'. The range of structures is limited, with few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly regarding the use of commas to separate clauses. A focus on basic sentence construction and tense accuracy is essential for improvement.
