Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses the task by summarising the main features and changes shown in the maps of the town square between 2014 and 2020. Key features such as the fish market, town hall, museum, and restaurants are identified, and relevant comparisons are made between the two periods, noting what changed (e.g., the fish market converting into a supermarket) and what remained the same (the town hall). While some details are presented somewhat simplistically, the overall overview in the second paragraph effectively outlines the major transformation of the area. The response satisfies all requirements for an informative and relevant summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is arranged into four paragraphs, following a logical structure from an introduction to an overview, followed by the features in 2014 and then the planned developments for 2020. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and mechanical transitions like 'begin with', 'by 2020', and 'on the other hand' are used with occasional awkwardness. Paragraphing is present and helps separate the time periods, but referencing and sentence transitions occasionally feel abrupt, such as in the disjointed listing of facilities in the final paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to maps and urban development such as 'transformation', 'demolished', 'supermarket', and 'administrative buildings'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'ware established' instead of 'were established', 'history museum' instead of 'historical museum', and 'build up' instead of 'were built'. Despite these limitations and spelling errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in tense usage, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'the given maps depicts' instead of 'depict', 'there was fish market' lacking an article, and 'adminstrative buildings has been installed' showing incorrect tense shifting. Punctuation and capitalization are also weak (e.g., lowercase starting letters for sentences). Although the writer attempts complex structures, these frequent errors restrict the score to a 5.0.
