Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. The student identifies key transformations, such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the history museum with a local artists' gallery. An overview is attempted, noting the addition of new facilities like the children's playground and plant beds. However, the overview is rather fragmented and basic, and some comparisons lack precision. While the general spatial relationships are captured, the development of ideas is somewhat limited, placing this response securely at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization with separate paragraphs for the introduction, overview, and body details, but the logical progression is weak. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'In 2014' and 'In 2020' to start sentences, along with awkward transition phrases like 'On the upside of square' and 'lastly there was library'. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences often feel disjointed rather than flowing naturally from one to the next, reflecting the characteristics of Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring basic terms such as 'place', 'build', and 'town'. There are noticeable spelling errors ('toen' instead of town, 'assembed', 'sme') and word-form inaccuracies ('were build' instead of were built). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic map changes, the frequent errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural and punctuation errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'In center there was fountain' and 'there were fewest place are in town'. Attempts at complex structures are rare and often faulty (e.g., 'As 2014 town hall in 2020 town hall was at sme place'). Errors frequently cause strain for the reader, aligning with the Band 5 descriptor.
