IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrate the changes that took place in a town square between 2014 and 2020, including the planned devevelopment of the surrounding area.

Overall, the town squre underwent considerable development by 2020. Several existing buildings were replaced by new facilities, while the central fountain remained unchaged.

To begin with, looking at the northen and western part of the square, several changes are planned. In 2014, the fish market was located in the north-west, but it will be replaced by a supermarket by 2020. Similarly, the history museum will be converted into local artists gallery, while the library will remain unchanged. The town hall in the north-east will also remained unchanged.

Furthermore, the most signficant changes involve recreational and commercial facilites. The bandstand in the centere will removed, although the fountain will remain in the same location . Two plant will be added near the northern side, and children's playground will be built to the east of the fountain. In addtion, covered seating will be introduced in the southern part, while the existing fish restaurant and bar will be replaced by several bars and restaurants. The administrative building on the eastern side will also repalced by shops.
