Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates a town square and it's environment in 2014 and the plans for constructing the area to be finished by 2020. Various improvement have been made to the 2020 vision.

Overall, there has been a significant improvement in future plans, modern facilities have been added in order to improve the town square , the center of the hall have moved from a minimalistic surrounding to a place more favourable for children, it has a greeny surrounding and someone can relax. However, the town hall still maintains the same position.

As at 2014, the center of the townsquare just had a fountain and a bandstand, but based on the plans for 2020 the bandstand has been replaced by 2 plants bed, 2 covered seating at the bottom placed at the corner opposite each other, then a children's playground located by the right hand side. However, the fountain maintains it's position.

The surroundings also had a major improvement, there was an increase in the number of buildings available. By the left hand side the history museum was replaced with local artist's gallery, while the library wasn't accounted for in the future plans. Also the at top surrounding the fish market was converted into a full supermarket, but the townhall still maintains the same position. Moreover, the administrative buildings located at the right end were transformed into shops. Finally at the bottom the fish restaurants was turned into a bar, while the bar transformed to a resturants

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully highlights the main features of the town square's transformation between 2014 and 2020. Key changes, such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket, the introduction of a children's playground, and the modification of surrounding buildings into shops and bars, are clearly reported. However, there are minor inaccuracies in the details, such as stating the library 'wasn't accounted for' when it is actually still depicted on the western side of the square, and slight confusion over the transformation of the southern venues. Nevertheless, an overview is provided and comparisons are made, satisfying the core requirements of Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs focusing on the central area and the surrounding buildings, which provides a logical structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but referencing could be improved; for instance, the phrase 'the center of the hall have moved' is unclear and disrupts the logical flow of ideas. Overall progression is visible, but cohesion needs smoother management to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'minimalistic', 'favourable', and 'surrounding'. However, there are several word choice errors, typos, and awkward collocations, such as 'it's environment' (its), 'improvement have been', '2 plants bed', and 'greeny surrounding'. Spelling errors like 'resturants' also occur. While communication is not severely impeded, these lexical inaccuracies and lack of precision prevent the score from rising into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the center of the hall have moved', 'plant beds' vs 'plants bed'), punctuation slips, and incorrect pronoun usage ('it's' instead of 'its'). Additionally, some sentences run on or lack proper structural control, such as '...then a children's playground located by the right hand side.' While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the attainment of a Band 7.
