Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing some of the main changes shown in the two maps of the town square between 2014 and 2020. However, the response suffers from significant weaknesses in selection and clarity. Several spatial relationships are misreported or confusingly described (e.g., placing the library and restaurant incorrectly, and stating that the fish market is located at the center alongside the fountain). While some key developments are mentioned, such as the supermarket replacing the fish market, the gallery replacing the museum, and the addition of the playground and shops, the overall summary lacks a clear, well-structured overview. The description is often difficult to follow due to poor spatial referencing. This performance aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay lacks clear paragraphing, being divided into a couple of dense, unstructured blocks that merge the introduction, overview, and body details together. Logical progression is severely hindered by a lack of cohesive devices and erratic spatial descriptions that disorient the reader. Phrases like 'And now as you are in the middle of the square' represent a very conversational and mechanical approach to transition rather than formal academic cohesion. Referencing between sentences is frequently unclear, making it hard to track locations across the two time periods. This meets the criteria for Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors ('Diagrame', 'digrametical', 'adjesent', 'eastren', 'westren', 'northren', 'seeting', 'Remian unchaged'). While the student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'supermarket', 'playground', 'gallery', and 'administrative building', the range is very limited. Word choices and collocations are frequently imprecise or awkward, such as 'fish market is upgraded to super market' or 'fountain seeting is installed'. These lexical errors and limitations place the response firmly at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex or descriptive constructions are consistently faulty due to missing punctuation, run-on clauses, and incorrect prepositions (e.g., 'entered from the right side of the square on east side there is Library'). Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect tense usage. Although the basic meaning can sometimes be extracted with effort, the high frequency of structural and punctuation errors impedes smooth reading and caps the score at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
