IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps illustrate the development of a town square and surrounding area from 2014 to the planned 2020.

Overall, the town center became more modern and visitor friendly. The fountain in center remained almost same, but many buildings changed their purposes and new facility were added.

In 2014, on the north side there was a fish market on the left and town hall on the right. In the middle there was a fountain and bandstand on the right side of the fountain. On the west side there were two buildings, history museum in the middle and library in the south-west. On the east side there were administrative buildings and on the south side there was a fish restaurant and a bar.

In 2020, many changes happend. The fish market in the north-west was changed into supermarket, while the town hall remained same. The bandstand was removed and two picnic benches were built in the place. The fountain in center stayed the same. On the east side, the administrative building were divided into small shops. On the south side, the fish restaurant and bar were converted into cafes and restaurants. On the west side, the history museum was replaced by a artist gallery. Also, a childrens playground and more customer setting were added near the center.
