The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The figure depicts a town square and its surroundings in 2014 and the strategies for the redevelopment of the site by 2020.

Overall, the town square surrounding area underwent major changes. Most of the vacant area in the center was covered with green area, recreational facilities and seating area. In 2020, commercial area was expanded to include more facilities for shopping and eating.

In 2020, the town hall remained same as it was in 2014. The fish market was converted into supermarket. In the center of town square, major development took place. The fountain remained in the center but its surrounding now included plant beds, a children playground and the covered seating.

Moreover, the administrative buildings were changed into shops. Fish restaurant and bar were converted into bars and restaurants by designating more area to them. There is no library included in 2020 unlike 2014. In 2020, history museum was changed into the local artists' gallery.
