IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given depiction illustrates the proposed developmental plans for the town square and surrounding area that are expected to complete in 2020. Addtionally, the map of town square in 2014 shows signifcant changes compared to the one in 2020.
A fountain is the central piece of the town square, and the only consistent place in both the illustratons. For the 2020's plan there are significant changes that are proposed, such as the new supermarket in the place of fish market. History meuseum would be converted into an art gallery. There would be a lot of new block for shops in the place of bars and admin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 106 words. Consequently, the development of the overview and reporting of the main features is severely curtailed. While the student correctly identifies some major changes, such as the supermarket replacing the fish market, the history museum becoming an art gallery, and the fountain remaining constant, the overall summary is incomplete. Key transformations on the eastern and southern sides of the town square are left vague or unfinished ('There would be a lot of new block for shops in the place of bars and admin'). Because the task is under-length and lacks full development, it cannot achieve a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The organization of the response is fragmented. The student attempts to introduce the maps with a general opening sentence, but the paragraphing breaks down immediately. The response consists of a short introductory section and a second underdeveloped paragraph that starts abruptly with 'A fountain is the central piece...'. Cohesive devices are minimal, and referencing is sometimes weak, such as referring to 'the illustratons' and 'the 2020's plan'. Furthermore, the text cuts off mid-thought at the end of the second paragraph, meaning there is no concluding synthesis or logical progression across a standard essay structure. Paragraphing is insufficient and inappropriate given the length.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and displays noticeable spelling errors, such as 'Addtionally', 'signifcant', 'illustratons', and 'meuseum'. The student attempts some less common phrasing ('central piece', 'proposed developmental plans'), but these are offset by recurring inaccuracies and a limited lexical range overall. Words like 'block' are used incorrectly in the plural context ('a lot of new block'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey a general idea about the visual data, the spelling mistakes and restricted range prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('that are expected to complete in 2020') and modal constructions ('would be converted'). However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There is an awkward phrasing error in 'expected to complete', which should be passive ('expected to be completed'). Errors also appear in articles and prepositions ('in the place of fish market'). Because the text is extremely short, the sample of grammatical structures is limited, and the presence of noticeable errors throughout the sentences impacts readability.
