Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. First and foremost, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum at just 103 words. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of the town square maps, the coverage is limited and lacks sufficient detail. Key developments, such as the replacement of administrative buildings with shops and the transformation of the south-western area into bars and restaurants, are omitted. The overview touches upon some changes, but overall the ideas remain underdeveloped and the response feels incomplete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with paragraphing used to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or awkward, such as starting consecutive sentences with 'Looking into the pictures' and repeating basic structures. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical flow prevents the text from achieving a higher level of cohesion. However, the basic division of ideas into paragraphs prevents the writing from becoming entirely disorganised.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are several noticeable spelling errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'modiefying', 'facalatate', 'sumermarket', and 'square town' instead of 'town square'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips distract the reader and reflect a restricted range of vocabulary, preventing the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, relying heavily on simple sentence forms and basic present tense structures. When complex structures or passive voice constructions are attempted, they are frequently faulty, as seen in 'plans for modiefying area which is completed to be in 2020' and 'which is remain same'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, voice, and word order that cause some difficulty for the reader, though the meaning is generally decipherable.
