Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a summary of the maps but with limited development and several mechanical descriptions. While the student identifies some key changes—such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the addition of a children's playground—the overall overview is vague and fails to capture the broader transformation of the area effectively. For instance, the statement that the 'town square was uncompleted in 2014' misinterprets the visual data. The details provided tend to list individual features rather than grouping them logically to highlight clear spatial comparisons between 2014 and 2020. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clearer, more accurate overall trend and extend the description of key spatial changes with greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the response, divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the 2014 and 2020 layouts. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel mechanical and disjointed. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or inaccurately, such as the frequent reliance on 'According to the first/second diagram'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal referencing is often unclear, making it difficult to follow spatial relationships smoothly. For instance, phrases like 'Fish market was located top' and 'in the under of fountain area' lack cohesive flow. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of transitional phrases and ensure logical sequencing that connects ideas naturally across paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout. Examples of awkward phrasing and lexical errors include 'ares' instead of area, 'daigram', 'northearn', 'Adminstrative', 'coverd', 'fountation', 'chilldren's', and 'museun'. While the student attempts some task-specific vocabulary such as 'supermarket', 'playground', and 'fountain', the frequent inaccuracies in spelling and collocation occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range beyond basic descriptors and eliminate basic spelling and word-choice errors through careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or passive structures that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The given two diagram represents', 'Adminstrative buildings was located', 'has adding some buildings', 'plant beds was adding', and 'Many shops was building remove with bar and restaurants'. These errors occur throughout the text and frequently cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student needs to improve control over basic grammatical agreements, past and present tense consistency, and the accurate formation of passive voice structures.
