Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all major parts of the task by outlining the key changes between 2014 and 2020. An overview is provided, noting the general shift from a cultural and administrative zone to a commercial and family-friendly area, which satisfies the requirements for a clear general trend. Key spatial details are highlighted, such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the administrative buildings with shops. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or lack precise spatial relations, such as the exact positioning of the new covered seating areas. To reach a higher band, the response would benefit from a more fully extended and detailed comparison of the features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The report demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to descriptions of the past and future layouts. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction, overview, baseline year, and future plan. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, with occasional issues in referencing and transitional links (such as the abrupt transition between sentences in the final paragraph). Cohesive devices are employed, but they are not always seamlessly integrated. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more precise referencing of spatial features across the two map panels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary related to urban planning, such as 'commercial', 'administrative', and 'converted'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'are' instead of 'area', 'complted', 'adminstrative', 'althrough', 'palce', 'libarary', 'adminastrative', 'wll', and 'resturant'. These errors do not completely impede communication, which keeps the response at this level, but they are frequent enough to restrict the score. To improve lexical performance, the writer must ensure greater accuracy in spelling and select more precise lexical items for describing spatial transformations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures to report future developments and past states. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly involving missing articles ('a supermarket', 'a local artists gallery'), incorrect prepositions ('in the palce', 'to the west'), and subject-verb agreement or tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'their was a fish restaurant', 'the band stand will be removed by two plant beds'). These errors occur regularly across the text and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, though they do not obscure the overall meaning. To progress, the writer needs to exercise better control over basic sentence mechanics, articles, and prepositional usage.
