Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram of town square illustrates the changes for the redevelopment of the area from 2014 to 2020.

Overall, several changes such as local artists gallery instead of history museum, supermarket replaced fish market, plantbeds exchanged with bandstands, covered seating, children's playground and shops were added in plan of the development of the area. While few things remained same.

There are few things that remianed same since 2014 includes fountain in the center of town, town hall and bar. The old administrative buildings in the town from 2014 were demolished and supreseded by new construction, so by 2020 I could not find them.

Since 2020, the town has changed a lot. For example, the old administrative building, fish market, bandstand , library, history museum and fish restaurant from 2014 are gone. Under the new redeveolopment plan, a lot changes have occoured since 2020 new supermarket , shops restauants were added.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While key elements such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the addition of a children's playground are mentioned, other significant details—such as the layout of the new shops and covered seating areas—are overlooked or only briefly touched upon. Additionally, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting the temporal perspective, such as stating that 'since 2020, the town has changed a lot,' which misrepresents the diagram as a future plan. Overall, the information presented is relevant, but some aspects lack full extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some organisation, but it lacks a clear, overall progression. The information is divided into short paragraphs, yet the sequencing of ideas feels disjointed, with repetitive mentions of what remained the same and what changed. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or are sometimes inaccurate, such as 'While few things remained same' standing alone without proper clause connection, or the abrupt transition 'Since 2020, the town has changed a lot.' Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping related features together lacks logical flow, and referencing pronouns occasionally becomes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial development smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the basic features of the maps, but the range is limited and repetitive. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'redevelopment,' 'demolished,' and 'superseded,' but these are accompanied by noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'plantbeds' instead of 'plant beds,' 'supreseded' instead of 'superseded,' and 'redeveolopment' instead of 'redevelopment.' Furthermore, phrases like 'exchanged with bandstands' demonstrate weak collocation. While meaning is generally conveyed despite these flaws, the frequent slips in spelling and lexical precision prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few basic complex forms. Attempts at more complex structures frequently result in faulty grammar, such as missing subjects or awkward relative clauses (e.g., 'There are few things that remianed same since 2014 includes fountain...'). There are frequent errors in verb forms and tenses, particularly confusion between past and future contexts regarding the 2020 plans (e.g., 'by 2020 I could not find them' and 'have occoured since 2020'). Article omissions (e.g., 'in center of town') and preposition misuse also occur regularly, causing some difficulty for the reader.
