The map illustrates a town square and its sorrounding area in 2014 and the expected upgradation plan of the area to be completed by 2020.

Overall, the area is expected to go through major upgradations from 2014 to 2020. The town square will see significant changes in its infrasturcture over this time period. Moreover, the sorrounding areas will also be converted into large markets and restaurants.

The town squre will experience significant development in 2020. Plant beds will be constructed on the north of the town square. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. An overall trend is provided in the second paragraph. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or under-developed. For instance, the student states that the administrative buildings on the west side will be upgraded into multiple shops, whereas the prompt and visual data indicate that the administrative buildings were on the eastern side and are replaced by shops, while the history museum and library were on the western side. Similarly, the bandstand is noted as being on the west side when it was actually located to the north-east of the fountain. These minor inaccuracies and slight omissions prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it solidly within the mid-range where the main features are covered but with some less precise reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, separating the introduction, the overview, the changes to the square itself, and the changes to the surrounding areas. Information is logically sequenced. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive in its referencing; the student frequently begins sentences with phrases like 'The town square will...' and 'Furthermore, surrounding areas will...'. Transitional devices are used, but referencing across sentences is not always seamless, and paragraphs could be linked more fluidly to demonstrate higher-level organizational skills. These features fully satisfy the requirements for a mid-level score while pointing toward the more flexible progression needed for a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing maps and spatial changes, incorporating terms such as 'upgradation', 'demolished', 'constructed', and 'supermarket'. However, there are notable spelling errors and lexical inaccuracies, such as 'sorrounding' (surrounding), 'infrasturcture' (infrastructure), 'upgradation' (upgrades/renovation), and 'sqaure' (square). Furthermore, the student relies on repetitive phrasing when describing transformations, frequently using 'upgraded into' where alternative verbs like 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'transformed into' would be more precise. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient for the task, but spelling slips and limited lexical variety prevent a higher rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing future structures and passive voice appropriately to describe map changes, such as 'Plant beds will be constructed' and 'Fish market will upgraded'. There are some noticeable grammatical errors, such as missing auxiliary verbs ('will upgraded' instead of 'will be upgraded') and incorrect prepositions ('on the north' instead of 'to the north'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are present, they rarely impede communication. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, placing the grammatical performance firmly in the mid-range band.
