Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, and the length requirement is not met, falling short of the 150-word minimum at only 138 words. While the writer attempts to present an overview and mention several changes between 2014 and 2020, such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the history museum with a local artists' gallery, the selection of features is incomplete and lacks proper integration. Furthermore, some reported details are inaccurate or confused, such as stating that the bandstand was replaced by plants while also mentioning a children's playground, and incorrectly describing the town hall's positioning. The lack of a well-developed summary and failure to reach the word count restrict the score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression across the response. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs are disjointed and consist of fragmented observations rather than cohesive groupings of information. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, as seen in repetitive sentence openings and abrupt transitions between sentences (e.g., 'Bandstand was demolised and that area was replaced by plants. On the sout-east of the fountain...'). Pronoun referencing and substitution are also poorly handled, making the flow mechanical and sometimes difficult to follow. To improve, the writer needs to group related spatial features logically and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to the maps, such as 'demolised', 'administrative buldings', and 'gallery', but these are accompanied by frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'dividen', 'sout-east', 'resturants', 'Fist', 'buldings', 'perivous') and awkward word choices. Words are often repeated unnecessarily, and collocation is weak, such as 'made supermarket' instead of 'converted into a supermarket'. These noticeable errors and limited lexical flexibility mean that communication is occasionally strained for the reader, keeping the lexical score at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing shows a very limited range of sentence structures, with heavy reliance on simple sentences and basic active forms. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, as demonstrated by awkward phrasing and tense errors in the opening sentence ('how a town square looked like in 2014 and how will it look like in 2020'). There are frequent errors in grammatical patterns, articles, and prepositions (e.g., 'remain stayed there', 'on the sout-east of the fountain'). These frequent errors and the lack of a varied grammatical structure cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
