Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response presents an overview of the changes in the town square between 2014 and 2020, attempting to address all parts of the task by mentioning major replacements such as the supermarket, galleries, and shops. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes unclear. For instance, the writer states that 'they plan to change the few parts of rural area,' which misinterprets the urban town square setting. While key features like the town hall remaining and the removal of the bandstand are noted, the selection lacks precision, and some details are repetitive or confused, such as the multiple mentions of the fish market being demolished. To move to a higher band, the response needs a more coherent selection of key features and a clearer, more accurate summary without inaccurate contextual assumptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organization with paragraph breaks and introductory linking phrases like 'As an overview,' 'To begin with,' and 'Moving towards to the rest of the information.' However, there is no clear overall progression, and the sequencing of information feels disjointed. Referencing is frequently unclear, with pronouns and relational phrases like 'as a area of this' and 'as near on this' creating confusion. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, and the abrupt transitions between disparate features impede the flow of the text. Improving cohesion requires logical grouping of spatial details—such as grouping northern and southern changes together—and using accurate, varied cohesive ties rather than repetitive formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring basic terms such as 'change,' 'area,' 'place,' and 'make.' There are noticeable word choice and word formation errors, such as 'plan beds' instead of plant beds, 'manufacture shops' instead of retail shops or units, and 'covering seating area' instead of covered seating. Phrasing is often unnatural, such as 'the bar is plan to be down.' These lexical inadequacies and inaccuracies sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to urban planning and spatial changes, demonstrating better control over collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammar demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled complex attempts. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, articles, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'town hall is still be there,' 'history museum as well as library and fishmarket has to demolished,' and 'fountain is still same.' Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also problematic, leading to run-on structures like 'there is a huge different in bandstand area it has been demolished.' These frequent errors cause considerable strain for the reader. To improve, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, consistent tense usage for future plans, and accurate prepositional phrasing.
