IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the 2014 diagram of town square, the top left is the fish market that will be replaced by a super market in 2020. Then on the top right we have the town hall, which will reflect no change. The middle Section in the 2014 figure consists of a library, a fountain, and a banstand near the corner of town hall and adminstrative building. And majority of the adminstrative building, is in the right middle side of the town square. Most of this will be replaced by the plant beds at the top, covered seating at the bottom and children's playground right between the shops and the fountain according to the 2020 figure.
And finally at the bottom and the right middle part of the town square, the fish restaurant and library will be developed into several smaller bars and restaurants. The entirity of the administrative building will transtioned into litle shops.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. While the student attempts to present some features of the 2014 and 2020 diagrams, the information is presented in a fragmented way without a clear overall overview of the main changes. Several inaccuracies occur in locating and reporting features, such as stating that the fish restaurant and library will be developed into bars and restaurants, whereas the visual data shows the history museum and library on the west and the fish restaurant and bar on the south. Additionally, the description lacks a clear comparative structure, making it difficult to fully grasp the transformation of the town square.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The text is divided into only two dense paragraphs with mechanical and repetitive transitions such as 'Then on the top right', 'And majority of the adminstrative building', and 'And finally at the bottom'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for instance using pronouns and directional phrases that create confusion about where features are positioned relative to one another. To move to a higher band, the student needs to group related information logically into well-defined paragraphs and use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student relies on basic terms to describe spatial locations and changes, alongside noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'super market', 'banstand', 'adminstrative', 'transtioned', 'litle', and 'entirity'. These errors indicate a lack of precision and control over less common vocabulary. To improve, the student should expand their range of functional language for describing maps and plans, ensuring correct spelling and appropriate collocations for features like buildings, amenities, and structural changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent reliance on basic patterns and some faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are persistent errors in articles, plurals, and prepositions within grammatical structures, such as missing articles ('in 2014 diagram of town square'), incorrect prepositions ('at the bottom and the right middle part'), and subject-verb agreement issues. Punctuation is also basic. To achieve a higher band, the student must produce a greater variety of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over basic grammatical forms and tense consistency.
