Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. However, the information provided is only partially accurate and suffers from several spatial misreadings when compared to the visual data. For instance, the student mislocates the history museum and library to the east, whereas they were on the western side in 2014, and describes the administrative buildings incorrectly. Furthermore, while an overview is present, the ideas lack full development, and some key spatial relationships are confused, keeping the task response at a limited level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that separates the introduction, overview, past layout, and future plans. Information is organized logically, with clear transitions between temporal periods. However, cohesion relies on somewhat repetitive and mechanical connectors such as 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is generally clear, though spatial referencing becomes slightly faulty when describing the exact positions of the new structures, bridging the gap between a basic and a well-organized response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to urban planning, such as 'upragdation' (a misspelling of upgrade), 'pedestrian friendly', and 'construction', but these attempts are marred by frequent spelling and word choice errors, including repeated typos like 'sorrounding' and 'restaurent'. Word formation and spelling mistakes require the reader to occasionally decode the text, reflecting a basic lexical control that restricts the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as introductory prepositional phrases and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with subject-verb agreement and prepositions, as seen in phrases like 'goes into significant upgradations', 'upgraded in to', and 'andtwo covered seating areas'. Articles are also omitted or misused in places. These errors, alongside persistent spelling issues categorized under vocabulary, show a restricted grammatical control that frequently causes minor hurdles for the reader.
