Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020, such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the addition of a playground. However, some aspects are under-developed or lack precise spatial detail, such as describing the exact locations of the newly introduced covered seating areas. While an overview is attempted through scattered observations, it lacks a distinct summary paragraph that synthesises the most striking overall trends. The selection of data is generally relevant, but the lack of fully extended and supported descriptions places this response firmly at the adequate level for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory statement to body paragraphs detailing specific spatial transformations. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related modifications together. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Whereas', and 'Moving further to other modifications' are employed to guide the reader through the comparison, though some links feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. Reference words like 'this process' and 'there' are generally clear, contributing to the overall readability of the text, but a more flexible and subtle use of cohesive ties is needed to reach the next higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'refurbishment', 'demolished', 'amenities', and 'perimeter'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some inaccuracies in word choice and word formation occur, such as writing 'plants beds' instead of 'plant beds' and 'artist's gallery' instead of 'artists' gallery'. Spelling and lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving greater precision and naturalness. To improve, the student should focus on accurate collocations and more varied lexical choices to describe spatial changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like passive voice ('has been demolished', 'has been constructed') and subordinate clauses ('Whereas, town hall remained steady...'). However, there are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('There area has experiences'), missing articles ('on east side'), and punctuation flaws like run-on sentences ('2014 and 2020.There area...'). While these errors rarely impede communication, their persistent presence across simple and complex sentences means control is still limited, characteristic of this grammatical level.
