Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present an overview and select main features of the town square maps. However, some parts of the task are only partially developed or contain inaccuracies. For instance, the student states that the top right corner was a fish market in 2014, whereas the visual data indicates the fish market was in the north-western (top-left) section and the town hall was in the north-east. The overview provides a general summary of the changes, but some details are under-developed or vague, such as stating the library was removed without fully accounting for the surrounding layout changes. To reach a higher band, all key features must be accurately reported with precise directional references, and the overall trends should be more fully articulated without factual misinterpretations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response displays some organization with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs addressing specific areas of the map, and a concluding summary. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the arrangement of ideas can feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as frequent shifts introduced by 'regarding', 'Interms of', and 'Turning to', which feel mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial relationships between 2014 and 2020. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally and ensure that sentences logically flow from one spatial feature to the next with clear transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and just minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'developmental blueprint' and 'installation', but there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'far more superior' (redundant) and 'occupdiviall' (a severe typo/spelling error). Other expressions, like 'core design it was has just a fountain', demonstrate inadequate control over word forms and collocations. These errors cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use precise terms for map transformations (such as 'demolished', 'converted', or 'relocated'), and eliminate spelling and word-formation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar, punctuation, and agreement throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('replaced by supermarket'), incorrect verb forms ('was expected to be completed' vs 'it was has just a fountain'), and capitalization errors ('interms', 'musuem'). Frequent grammatical errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher level of accuracy. To improve in this area, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, consistent tense usage when describing past and future plans, correct article usage, and accurate punctuation.
