Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response sits at this band because it addresses the task only partially. First, it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement, coming in at 142 words, where 16 words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the official count. While the writer attempts to summarise the main features of the maps, such as the conversion of the fish market into a supermarket and changes to the town hall, the overview lacks clarity and is poorly developed. Several key features are either omitted or inaccurately reported, such as claiming that bars and restaurants are not changed when the 2020 map shows new units along the southern perimeter. Furthermore, the reliance on vague phrasing and informal conversational interjections like 'First of all, we assume' prevents a fully objective, academic summary of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Cohesion and logical organisation are limited at this level. The text lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as two dense blocks of text that do not guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of the two years. While some cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'First of all', 'In addition to this', and 'Moreover', they are often used mechanically or inappropriately for an academic report. The progression of ideas lacks clear structure, jumping between different areas of the map without a logical spatial or thematic flow. Referencing is also weak at times, making it difficult to follow which specific buildings or alterations are being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is mostly basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words directly lifted from the visual prompt such as 'fish market', 'supermarket', 'town hall', 'fountain', and 'bandstand'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'surronding' instead of 'surrounding' and awkward word choices such as 'covered sealing' instead of 'covered seating' and 'childrens play ground' without proper apostrophe usage. Furthermore, attempts to use less common words result in unnatural phrasing like 'shops are improve', which indicates restricted control over word formation and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Grammatical control is constrained by a limited range of structures. The writer attempts mostly simple sentences alongside a few faulty complex structures, leading to frequent grammatical errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralisation, such as 'fountain are remain unchanged' and 'administrative building are located'. Prepositional usage and active/passive voice errors are also frequent, seen in phrases like 'where the fish market was located are converted in to supermarket' and 'are removed and plant beds are develop'. Punctuation is basic, and these recurring structural errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader in grasping the intended meaning.
