Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. The overview outlines the principal transformations, such as the addition of a supermarket, shops, and a children's playground. However, some aspects are under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the writer notes that the 'fountain was same located since 2014' and mentions that the town hall remained unchanged, but details regarding the exact spatial layout of the eastern and southern areas are occasionally vague or lack clear comparative context. To reach a higher level, the response would need to integrate the data more fluidly and present a fully extended overview that clearly highlights all major spatial shifts without minor inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement, dividing the description into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the 2014 layout and the 2020 changes. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty. Transitional markers like 'In 2014', 'By 2020', and 'moreover' are used, but referencing and logical progression are occasionally unclear, as seen in abrupt shifts between features in the body paragraphs (e.g., 'Bandstone was removed and add new two plant beds. next to side of foundain...'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal linking within paragraphs needs to be smoother to guide the reader effortlessly through the comparisons. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure clearer logical links between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to accomplish the task, though it is limited and marred by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'daigram' instead of diagram, 'sqare' instead of square, 'ares' instead of areas, 'Bandstone' instead of bandstand, and 'coverted' instead of converted. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'dramatically change' and 'administrative buildings', but frequent errors in spelling and collocation ('Administrative was located', 'Fish market and bar was removed') somewhat impede communication at times. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range, demonstrate more precise control over word choices, and eliminate spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows a limited range of structures with frequent errors in grammar, articles, prepositions, and verb forms. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures often contain faulty syntax, such as 'The give two daigram illustrates', 'adding with supermarket', and 'fountain was same located'. There are also frequent issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles (e.g., 'where bandstand was', 'new buiding was add that children playground'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy and improve control over basic grammatical agreements and tense consistency.
