Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the maps, noting key changes such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the addition of recreational areas. However, some details are inaccurate or inadequately presented. For instance, the town hall actually remained in the north-east rather than being expanded into the bandstand area, and the description of the library and surrounding buildings contains confusion regarding what was modified or replaced. As a result, the information is only partially reported, and some key comparisons are missed or misread, keeping the performance at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
There is a general overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In the year 2014', 'moreover', and 'furthermore', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing of locations ('at the top right corner', 'in the top left side') helps guide the reader through the maps, but occasional awkward sequencing and mechanical linking prevent a smoother logical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to town planning and map features, such as 'redevelopment', 'supermarket', and 'gallery'. However, there are noticeable word choice, word form, and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'illustrates' with a plural subject ('The two maps illustrates'), 'musemum', 'gallary', and 'rebuit'. These lexical inaccuracies and limited flexibility restrict the range of vocabulary displayed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that often contain faults. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps illustrates'), missing articles ('a fountain was there', 'town hall'), and punctuation errors like lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('overall', 'at the top right'). These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally slow down, though the overall meaning remains accessible.
