Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pictorial evidence beneath demonstrates a town square and it's neighbouring area and in paralell a plan is displayed for its renovation.
Overall, the most noticeable features is that the new plan advises plenty of new ammenities that were not present before. Fish market is replaced by supermarket meanwhile, a large area is dedicated for bars and restaurants. While the structure remains almost the same.
Looking first at, the new facilities proposed in the plan like an addition of playground, covered seating and plant beds. A pelnty of space is acquired by bars and restaurants in the plan and it can be clearly seen that around five blocks are reserved for shops.
Turning to the facilities which are removed or replaced, history museum is replaced with local artists gallery. Fish market is replaced with super market while library and bandstand could not be seen in the given proposal. Another significant change is the removal of administrative buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020, making relevant comparisons throughout. An overview is provided that captures the general trend of development, noting the addition of new amenities and the expansion of dining and retail areas. However, certain ideas remain slightly under-developed or general, such as the specific transformation of the eastern administrative buildings into divided retail units. The selection of data is generally accurate, capturing key shifts like the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the history museum with a gallery, which meets the requirements for a solid mid-level performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs detailing new and removed facilities. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct aspects of the visual data. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, evident in awkward transitional phrases such as "Looking first at," where punctuation disrupts the flow, and referencing issues like "it's" instead of "its". While logical sequencing is maintained, cohesive devices could be managed more smoothly and flexibly to elevate the structural flow of the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items such as "renovation", "amenities", and "proposal". However, there are noticeable spelling errors ("ammenities", "pelnty", "paralell"), incorrect word forms ("super market"), and minor word choice inaccuracies that slightly detract from precision. The range is limited but minimally adequate, covering the essential spatial features of the maps yet lacking the lexical flexibility and control required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. There are issues with punctuation, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as the comma splice in "Looking first at, the new facilities..." and the missing article in "An addition of playground". Subject-verb agreement and punctuation slips, such as the incorrect apostrophe in "it's", are present. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
