Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the current structure and plans for development of town square and sorrounding area in 2014 to be completed by 2020.

Overall it is evident that sorrounding area of the town square remains the same without any extension, but it will be well organised according to the plans. Moreover, the fountain in the center and the buildings around it will remain the same as constructed. However, the location of shops and sitting area will be changed.

First of all looking at the fountain, covered sitting, children's playground and plant beds will be added in front of buildings in the center. Then looking at major changes, fish market will be converted into supermarket, history museum will be shifted to local artist gallery, shops will take place of administrative buildings.

Considering some other plans, libarary and band stand will be removed from the area. Whereas, loaction of the town hall will remain unchanged just like the fountain.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. An overview is provided, noting that the overall perimeter remains unchanged while the internal layout and facilities are reorganised. However, some aspects are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies; for instance, the text claims the library and bandstand will be removed from the area, whereas the visual data shows the bandstand is replaced by a children's playground and the library building is reconfigured. Key transformations, such as the addition of covered seating and multiple retail units, are mentioned, but comparisons could be extended further to fully explore the spatial dynamics of the two plans.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific spatial changes. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, the general overview, and the detailed breakdown of developments. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "First of all", "Then looking at major changes", and "Considering some other plans". However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, and paragraphing could be structured more tightly around thematic shifts rather than single-sentence paragraphs for minor points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, enabling the student to communicate basic transformations such as "converted into supermarket" and "remain unchanged". There are attempts to use less common items, but these are accompanied by lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips, such as "sorrounding" instead of surrounding, "libarary" instead of library, and "loaction" instead of location. Word choice is occasionally awkward, such as "shops will take place of administrative buildings" instead of replacing administrative buildings, which reflects a limited control of collocations and precision at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like "the fountain in the center and the buildings around it will remain the same as constructed." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ("development of town square", "local artist gallery") and preposition misuse ("in front of buildings in the center"). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the basic tense control for future plans and past states is generally maintained throughout the response.
