Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrate the development plans for a town square in 2014 which is to be completed by 2020.

Overall, many substantial differences can be observed between the two diagrams indicating major development by the year of 2020. It is also noted that some features of the old town square remain unchanged.

On the one hand, it is observed that fountain remains unchanged and remains the central part of the town square it can also be seen that town hall remains in the same position of top right corner and one other characterisctic that is similar to the old blueprint is the position of bars and restaurants which is still placed at the south face of the square.

On the other hand, it is noted the new blueprint has some major alterations such as the present fish market is planned to be altered into a supermarket and there are plans to transform the administrative buildings into seperate shops it can also be seen that covered seating can be installed around the fountain along with a children's playground and some plant beds to make it more vibrant and eye pleasing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. It meets the standard of addressing all parts, though some areas are developed more fully than others. For example, while the transformation of the fish market into a supermarket and the administrative buildings into shops is clearly reported, other alterations like the local artists' gallery replacing the history museum are omitted. Furthermore, comparisons are made effectively, such as noting that the fountain and town hall remain unchanged. To reach higher bands, the writer should ensure a more comprehensive selection of key features is reported without missing significant spatial transformations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Logical organization is evident through the use of standard transition phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty due to run-on sentences and a lack of proper punctuation between clauses, such as in the sentence starting with 'it is observed that fountain remains unchanged...'. Paragraphing is utilized, but internal sentence linking relies heavily on repetitive formulaic phrases like 'it is observed that' and 'it can also be seen that', which makes the progression feel somewhat mechanical rather than naturally flowing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an acceptable range with appropriate task-specific terms such as 'supermarket', 'administrative buildings', and 'children's playground'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'vibrant and eye pleasing', though this includes a minor hyphenation oversight. There are a few word-form and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'charaterisctic' and 'seperate', which show minor lapses in control. Communication is not impeded by these slips, but to achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise and varied lexical range with fewer spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses. However, there is a noticeable lack of punctuation, resulting in several run-on sentences and comma splices, particularly in the third and fourth paragraphs where multiple independent clauses run together without proper terminal punctuation. Grammatical errors are present, such as missing articles ('fountain remains unchanged' instead of 'the fountain') and occasional agreement issues. These errors rarely impede overall communication, but the frequency of punctuation slips and faulty complex structures prevents the writing from attaining a higher level of grammatical control.
