Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square maps between 2014 and 2020 and making relevant comparisons, such as noting that the fountain remained while other areas changed. However, some ideas are under-developed or inadequately supported. For instance, the transition of the library and administrative buildings lacks clear spatial contextualisation, and certain changes are mentioned vaguely without fully detailing the scope of the new facilities like the shops and bars. This places the task achievement firmly at the targeted level, where the overall picture is communicated, but specific details require more rigorous extension and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, starting with an introductory overview and progressing through spatial changes. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies on repetitive transitional expressions like "in addition", "furthermore", and run-on phrasing without adequate punctuation or full stops, leading to long, confusing sentences. Paragraphing is also under-utilised, with the response crammed into a few large blocks rather than logically separating the central features. Referencing between old and new locations is sometimes unclear, which hampers the smooth progression of information across the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully capturing key map terminology such as "supermarket", "history museum", "plant beds", and "children's playground". The writer attempts less common vocabulary phrases like "local artists' gallery", but there are notable lexical and word-form inaccuracies throughout, such as writing "illustrate" instead of "illustrates", and awkward phrasing like "changed had been significant". While these inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, they reveal a limited control over word choice and collocation, preventing the response from achieving a higher lexical band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as "plans for changes of the area completed from 2014 to 2020" and "town hall remain some". Punctuation is heavily neglected, resulting in comma splices and run-on sentences where independent clauses are improperly joined. Although some basic sentences are formed correctly, the accumulation of structural inaccuracies and the absence of proper sentence demarcation place the grammatical range and accuracy at this level.
