Student answer (Band 6.0)

The following map illustrates a town square and its surrounding area in 2014 and also shows the future development plan of that area which will be completed by 2020.

Overall, the map tells us about the future transformation of an area named as town square. It shows us that in 2014, there was a fountain in the center of the town and a bandstand is on the north east corner of the town. On the north side, there is a fish market and a town hall. West side contains a history museum and a library and on the south side, there is a fish restaurant and a bar with an administrative staff buildings.

In 2020, the town square will be changed. The town hall and fountain will remain on the their same spot. Plant beds will be constructed on the north side of the fountain and on the south east side, there will be new children's playground and covered seating. The administarative buildings, bar and fish restaurant will be transformed into shops. While on the place of fish market, new super market will be constructed beside a new local artists gallery.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to address all parts of the prompt by describing the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020. However, the evaluation sits at this level because some details are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For example, the writer mentions that the administrative buildings, bar, and fish restaurant will be transformed into shops, whereas the visual data shows that the eastern side becomes shops while the southern and south-western perimeter buildings become bars and restaurants. Additionally, the overview tends to mechanically list individual features rather than synthesising the most salient overall transformations, such as the general shift from commercial and municipal functions to leisure and retail spaces.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical separation into an introduction, an overview paragraph, a description of the 2014 layout, and the 2020 changes. Progression is generally clear, moving naturally from the past layout to future alterations. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on basic linking words like 'while' and 'on the south side'. Referencing is occasionally slightly loose, such as 'on the their same spot', which prevents the organisation from achieving a more fluid and sophisticated progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'fountain', 'bandstand', 'history museum', and 'plant beds'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'staff buildings' instead of 'administrative buildings' and 'super market' written as two words. However, these lexical slips do not impede communication, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to convey the intended spatial changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over future tenses like 'will be changed' and 'will be constructed'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as tense shifts ('a bandstand is on the north east corner' when describing the past) and article misuse ('on the their same spot'). Despite these occasional lapses, the grammatical structures used do not impede communication, and simple sentences are generally well-controlled.
