Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrates the changes that took place in the town square between 2014 and 2020.

Overall, the town square underwent considerable development, with new recreational facilities being added, while some existing structures were removed and some remained at the same location.

In the year 2014, the town square had less facilities available. The fish market and town hall were residing next to each other in the northern part of the town. The centre of town comprise fountain and bandstand situated slightly just below the town hall. Moreover, the fish restaurant and bar were in the south of town while, history museum and library were next to each other in the western part of the town. Administrative buildings were in the east of the town.

In the year 2020, supermarket replaced fish market and town hall remained at the same location in the north of town. The centre of town was reconstructed with plant beds in the north side, fountain in the centre, children's playground in southwest and covered seating on the both side of fountain. Administrative buildings were converted with shops in eastern part of town. Whereas, history museum were replaced with local artists gallery and bars and restaurants in the south of town.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the town square in 2014 and the proposed changes for 2020, along with relevant comparisons. You provide an overview and cover most key spatial details, such as the replacement of the fish market with a supermarket and the addition of covered seating and a children's playground. However, certain aspects are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, stating that the centre of town comprise fountain and bandstand misses the exact placement and details of other surrounding buildings, and some features like the library are mentioned in 2014 but omitted from the 2020 comparison overview. To reach a higher level, ensure all major zones are consistently tracked and extended with clearer, more precise comparative details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and the two individual time periods. Information is organised logically, moving from the initial layout to the future plans. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat repetitive in how sentences are introduced, such as starting multiple paragraphs with temporal phrases like 'In the year 2014' and 'In the year 2020'. Referencing is generally functional, but transitions between ideas within paragraphs could flow more smoothly. To improve further, employ a wider range of cohesive devices and referencing pronouns to link the past and future elements more naturally without relying on formulaic time markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic transformations and locations using terms like 'reconstructed', 'replaced', and 'administrative buildings'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'had less facilities available' instead of fewer facilities, and 'comprise fountain' rather than comprising a fountain or featuring a fountain. Some less common vocabulary is attempted, but with minor errors that occasionally detract from precision. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensuring accurate word forms, such as 'local artists' gallery' and correct prepositional phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, effectively describing past and future states using appropriate tenses like past simple and future-directed descriptions. There are, nevertheless, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'replaced fish market' instead of the fish market) and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'were residing' instead of stood or were located, and 'comprise' instead of comprised). Prepositions are also misused at times, such as 'on the both side' instead of on both sides. These errors are recurrent, though they rarely impede overall communication. To improve, work on article usage, subject-verb agreement, and accurate tense consistency when describing maps.
