Student answer (Band 5.0)

The first diagram illustrates a town aquare and surrounding area in 2014.

The second one shows the plan if the sale town's plan in 2020

Overall , the centre if town IS ocupied by a fountain , starting from the top right, we can see the town hall , the administrative buildings that will be replaced by shops.

bars and restaurants will take place instead of the fish restaurant and the only bar existing, so that there will be a variation of food and drinks that people can look for.

moving to the left , a huge supermarket will open above the gallery of local artists that was a history museum back in 2014.

The best improvement will take place surrounding the fountain , in fact , in 2014 the center of town was empty where we can only find a bandstand at the right.

Fortunately, in 2020 , the plan considered having a playground for children ,covered seating and some plan beds just on top of the centric fountain.

the plan doesn't show any details about the library, either it will be replaced or no , but i think it's area is perfect and it s very important if it's not moved away.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the fish market by a supermarket, the conversion of the history museum into a gallery, and the addition of a playground and covered seating. You also note that the town hall and central fountain remain. However, the response only partly summarises the plans: it does not clearly describe the two plant beds, the two separate seating areas, or the shops replacing the eastern administrative buildings in a complete overview. The claim that the centre was “empty” in 2014 is inaccurate, since it contained the fountain and bandstand. The final comments about the library speculate about its future rather than reporting the map. Focus on a concise overview of the main transformations and describe only features shown in the plans.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: you introduce the two maps, give an overall statement, and then move around the square, using phrases such as “starting from the top right” and “moving to the left.” These cues help the reader follow parts of the description. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the response shifts from map description to personal evaluation (“The best improvement”) and speculation about the library. Several ideas are joined in long, loosely punctuated sentences, while paragraphing does not clearly separate the overview from the detailed comparisons. Group the changes by location or by what remains and what is replaced, and use clear paragraph breaks and accurate linking phrases to make the sequence easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “gallery,” “covered seating,” and “playground.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the description less precise, such as “town aquare,” “sale town’s plan,” “variation of food and drinks,” and “plan beds.” Some expressions are also too subjective for an academic map report, including “Fortunately” and “The best improvement.” Choose neutral, precise terms and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the new commercial units as shops and bars/restaurants, and refer to the planted areas as plant beds. This would make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “where” and “that.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled successfully, and frequent errors affect clarity. Examples include “The second one shows the plan if the sale town’s plan in 2020,” “the centre if town IS ocupied,” and “it s very important if it's not moved away.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, with several comma splices and missing capitalisation after full stops. Practise forming complete, direct sentences with accurate articles, verb forms, and clause links. For instance, state clearly that the fountain remains central and that the bandstand is replaced by a playground.
