IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps illustrate the key structural alterations implemented in a town square and its surroundings between 2014 and 2020.
Overall, the area was substantially redeveloped from a muncipal and dinining centre into a commercial and recreational hub, with the central fountain being the sole original feature retaine.
In2014, the central area contained a fountain and a bandstand. By 2020, while the fountain remained in place, the bandstand was removed to make space for plant beds, covered seating, and a children's playground.
The surrounding buildings were also extensively restructured. Along the northern perimeter, the fish market was replaced with a supermarket, while the townhall was preserved. The history museum beacme a local artist's gallery, while the library , the southern fish restaurant and the bar were replaced by small retail shops. Similiarly, eastern administrative buildings were converted to retail shops, and new bars and restaurants were relocated near the southern entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response gives a clear overview of the main transformation, identifying the shift from civic and dining uses towards commercial and recreational functions, and correctly notes that the fountain remained while the bandstand disappeared. It also reports several key changes, including the supermarket replacing the fish market and the gallery replacing the museum. This selection and comparison are well focused. However, some details are inaccurate or over-generalised: the library is not described as becoming shops, and the southern fish restaurant and bar were incorporated into bars and restaurants rather than simply replaced by shops. The plant beds were not created in place of the bandstand. More precise reporting of the western and southern perimeter changes would make the account more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is organised effectively: an introduction is followed by a concise overview, then paragraphs covering changes to the square’s central area and surrounding buildings. This gives the reader a clear progression from the broad transformation to specific locations. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “By 2020,” “while,” and “Similarly” help connect comparisons across the two maps. The final paragraph, however, compresses several distinct changes into one long sequence, and the relationship between the library, shops, and southern food outlets becomes difficult to follow. Grouping the western buildings separately from the eastern and southern perimeter would make the information easier to track. Overall, cohesion is flexible and the organisation remains clear, with some room for more precise grouping.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is a useful range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “substantially redeveloped,” “perimeter,” “preserved,” and “converted,” which helps describe both the scale and nature of the changes. Phrases such as “commercial and recreational hub” also provide an effective summary. However, several spelling errors—“muncipal,” “dinining,” “retaine,” “beacme,” and “Similiarly”—reduce accuracy and polish. Some wording is also imprecise: “relocated” suggests the bars and restaurants were moved from elsewhere, whereas the map shows new or divided units, and “small retail shops” is not fully supported by the labels. More exact terms for the new uses, alongside careful proofreading, would strengthen lexical control and make the descriptions more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response uses a good mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “with the central fountain being…” and a contrast structure in “while the fountain remained in place.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons clearly, and the use of past-tense descriptions is generally appropriate. A few errors remain in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “In2014” needs a space, and the sentence beginning “The history museum…” contains an unintended double space and a space before the comma after “library.” The final sentence also joins several changes in a way that makes the relationships between them less clear. These are limited issues rather than persistent breakdowns; more careful editing and clearer sentence boundaries would improve accuracy further.
