Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustartes a town square and around area in 2014 and the plan after the reconstruction of area in 2020.

Overall, the area after development is very convient for the public. There were plenty new places added such as shops, covered seating, a childern's playground and a supermarket while some places were kept unchanged.

To begin, in the middle of area, there was a fountain which is at same location in 2020. In 2020, a children's playground was added next to the fountain and two covered seating space were added in the centre for the visitors. However, bars and fish restaurant were in the southern area which are now combine with a large space called as bars and restaurants. Library was in the western area now being removed. Meanwhile, history museum was replaced with local artists' gallery.

Furthermore, the bandstand which was at the centre was removed and two planting beds were added. The administrative building in the eastern area was changed into multiple shops. Town hall in north was kept as it is, but there was a fish market which is removed and a supermarket was added at that place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main changes, noting that the fountain and town hall remain while new facilities are introduced and some existing buildings are replaced. The details about the supermarket replacing the fish market, the gallery replacing the history museum, and shops taking the place of the administrative buildings are accurate and relevant. However, some descriptions are imprecise: the covered seating is on either side of the fountain, not “in the centre,” and the two plant beds are in the northern part of the square rather than simply added after the bandstand is removed. The library’s removal is also worth stating more clearly. Your coverage is strong overall, but greater positional precision and a more complete account of the layout would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes. The progression from central features to the surrounding buildings is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “To begin,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal shifts. This organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Meanwhile” does not clearly show the relationship between the library and the history museum, and the final paragraph moves from the bandstand to plant beds, shops, and the town hall without a consistent spatial route. Grouping changes by location—north, centre, and perimeter—would make the comparisons more cohesive and help readers follow the map.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “replaced,” “removed,” “added,” and “kept unchanged,” which helps communicate the main transformations. However, the range and control of word choice are limited by several noticeable spelling and collocation errors, such as “illustartes,” “convient,” “childern's,” “combine with a large space,” and “called as.” Some phrases are also too general: “plenty new places” does not describe the changes precisely, and “planting beds” is less natural here than “plant beds.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall account, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim for accurate, conventional map-report expressions and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “which,” and “but,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, errors in articles, verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction occur often enough to limit accuracy. Examples include “around area,” “in middle of area,” “two covered seating space were added,” and “which are now combine.” The sentence “Library was in the western area now being removed” also lacks a clear grammatical link between the past and present information. Use complete comparative structures, maintain consistent past and future forms, and check singular/plural agreement. More accurate control of these patterns would make your descriptions easier to read.
