IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram shows the development plan for a town square and its surrounding area in 2014 and after completion in 2020.
Overall, the redevelopment plan involves the conversion of the fish market into a supermarket and the construction of shops, along with the replacement of the library. The history museum is replaced with a local artists' gallery. Additionally, seating, a playground, and plant beds are part of the development made in 2020.
In 2020, the area of the administration building was used for the construction of shops, followed by the children's playground, covered seating and plant beds in the main ground around the fountain and the bandsatand was removed. The fish market, which was located the other side of the town hall and the history museum below it in 2014, were replaced by the supermarket and local artists' gallery, respectively. However, the restaurant and bar remained in their position in both years

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the main direction of change and gives a useful overview: the fish market becomes a supermarket, the history museum becomes a gallery, and new seating, planting and play facilities are introduced. It also correctly notes that the town hall and fountain remain, and that the bandstand is removed. This covers the task well, with some features described specifically. However, the overview says the library is replaced, although the plan does not identify what happens to it, and the final claim that the restaurant and bar remain in the same positions is inaccurate: the southern buildings are reorganised into multiple bars-and-restaurants units. The locations of the new features are also described vaguely. More precise, fully accurate comparisons would complete the response more effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details about the planned changes. This gives the reader a coherent general account. However, the final paragraph combines several changes in a long sentence, making the relationships between them difficult to follow; for example, “followed by the children's playground, covered seating and plant beds” does not clearly explain their locations or sequence. The phrase “the fish market … and the history museum … were replaced” also makes the reference and comparison less clear. Use separate sentences or group details by area, such as the northern buildings, central square and perimeter, and make links between old and new uses explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for describing a redevelopment plan, and terms such as “conversion,” “construction,” “replaced” and “covered seating” help communicate the main changes. There is some attempt at more specific language, but several choices are imprecise or awkward for a map description. “The area of the administration building was used for the construction of shops” is wordy; “the administrative buildings were replaced by shops” is clearer. “Main ground” is not a natural description of the square, while “the other side of the town hall” does not specify a clear direction. The spelling “bandsatand” is also inaccurate. Choose concise location vocabulary such as “to the west of” or “in the centre,” and check spelling of labels from the plan.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a clear overview sentence and a relative clause in “The fish market, which was located…”. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward sentence construction reduce precision. In “the fish market … and the history museum … were replaced,” the plural verb does not fit the two separate replacement statements cleanly; restructuring this as two clauses would help. The sentence beginning “In 2020, the area…” also has an unclear sequence of phrases, and “the restaurant and bar remained in their position” has a number mismatch between two businesses and one position. Aim for shorter, controlled sentences and check agreement, articles and clause structure.
