Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the town square model in 2014 which is very simple and has only few basic buildings leaving much of the space around the area empty whereas much upgradation has been planned for the township which is likely to be completed in 2020. The future constructions to be made have modernization in it.

The fish market situated at the top west of the founatain in 2014 will be converted to supermarket but the town hall right beside it will remain as it is. The area surrounding the fountain which now has only a bandstand will have covered seatings and playground where children will be able to play as well as plant beds. The general museum will be developed into the modern state-of-the-art gallery. The fish resturant and bar will be repalced with various new bars and resturants. As for the whole area for administrative buildings situated towards east will be transformed into various small shops in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main direction of change and report several accurate comparisons: the fish market becomes a supermarket, the town hall remains, the central fountain is retained, and the eastern administrative buildings become shops. You also mention the new playground, seating, plant beds and expanded food businesses. This covers the task’s key features, but some details are less fully or precisely reported. For example, the history museum becomes a local artists’ gallery, not a “general museum,” and the 2014 bandstand is replaced by the playground rather than being the only feature around the fountain. The opening gives a broad overview, but “much of the space…empty” is not clearly supported by the plan. A more precise overview and clearer location comparisons would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a generally logical sequence, moving from the overall change to the northern buildings, central square and southern/eastern uses. Linking expressions such as “whereas,” “but,” and “As for” help show contrast, and the reader can follow the main transformations. However, the response is presented as one paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. Some references are also imprecise: “the area surrounding the fountain which now has only a bandstand” makes the relationship between the fountain and bandstand unclear, while “beside it” could refer to either the market or the fountain. Use a distinct overview paragraph followed by organised detail paragraphs, and make references explicit to improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing redevelopment, including “converted,” “remain,” “transformed,” and “covered seating.” These choices communicate many changes effectively. However, several expressions are inaccurate, awkward or overly evaluative for a map report: “town square model,” “much upgradation,” and “modernization” do not describe the plans precisely, while “state-of-the-art” adds an unsupported judgement. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “founatain,” “resturant,” “repalced,” and “resturants,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for neutral, precise map language and check spelling carefully. Terms such as “is replaced by,” “is redeveloped as,” and “is located to the east of” would suit this task more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a relative clause in “where children will be able to play.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, and the future passive in “will be converted” is appropriate. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “Has only few basic buildings” needs an article or a different quantifier, and “the fish market situated…” is a sentence fragment unless it is joined to a main clause. The opening sentence also runs several ideas together, making its structure difficult to control. In addition, “the area…will have covered seatings and playground” needs clearer article and plural forms. Use shorter, complete sentences and check articles, agreement and clause boundaries.
